Meeting to Continue Discernment on Reparations

When:
2021-08-22 @ 9:15 am – 10:45 am
2021-08-22T09:15:00-04:00
2021-08-22T10:45:00-04:00
Continuing our Reparations discussions from January through April, our AFM Change Group planners have given us some time off, but hope we can resume our discernment sessions.
Please put this date on your calendar! Here is a link to register in advance for this meeting:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
As in our earlier meetings, we’ll divide the breakout  groups into three areas and consider next steps. We hope that each of our three breakout groups will make plans soon to complete a reparations-related report and a proposed minute to our AFM Meeting for Business:
1) What is  0ur language as we discuss “reparations?”  What does “reparations,” or “retrospective justice” mean to us? To impacted people? (PLUS, how can we best bring this discernment into an AFM minute and webpage? Note that groups 2 & 3 also may contribute to this minute.)

2) AFM possible steps taking on the reparations concern: After our endorsement of HR40, how might we encourage other Meetings/ other groups to do so? Prepare a soul-searching minute to guide us? Create an AFM reparations page on our website? (How do we collaborate on a draft an AFM minute on reparations? —Note that groups 1 & 3 also may contribute to this minute.)

3) AFM participation in a local truth & reconciliation process.  How might AFM take part in a local truth & reconciliation process?  As to our Quaker history? As to our local community? (PLUS: Is Meeting for Business endorsement needed? Should part of these T&R considerations be included in an AFM reparations minute — note that groups 1 & 2 also will contribute to this minute. )
Here are notes from our fourth Zoom meeting with summaries of the initial “report out” of these three breakout groups. As before, Friends are invited to change groups, if you are so inclined. To request participation  in one of these breakout groups particularly, please email me at pcaroom@gmail.com. If you were not able to participate in the prior Reparations meetings, we still would welcome you at the next step. But, we might ask you to do a bit of preparation so that you can share the background information of those who participated earlier. If you have questions, again, please email me – pcaroom@gmail.com.)
Here also is a new resource for us– a 2021 article in Friends Journal as to reparations, referred to as “Retrospective Justice” by a Black Quaker who also is a Harvard University prof.–Hal Weaver.  There is a longer Pendle Hill pamphlet also by Weaver (#465) on the topic but the above article is an excellent excerpt.

We look forward to seeing you on 8/22 at 9:15 am!
