Meeting for Learning: Worshipful Consideration of Race Part 2: Native Americans

In the video Dawnland, Gkisedtanamoogk, of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, who hundreds of years ago befriended the English settlers at Plymouth, speaks of a “necessary transition from being an occupier to being a neighbor.” The movie documents for us the process and experience of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of the State of Maine and the Wabanaki communities there.

Some Wabanaki are Quaker. There was a Wabanaki Friend at the recent World Plenary Meeting in South Africa. There is a Wabanaki Friends Service Committee, a program of the American Friends Service Committee. But beyond these particular Quaker connections, Dawnland shows a process of truth-seeking that can lead to repair and healing, which we hope Friends will find meaningful.

On August 25, 9:15-10:45am, in the large classroom, Marcia Ormsby and Ann Riggs will lead a Meeting for Learning using Dawnland. At the Dawnland website you can watch a trailer for the movie (https://dawnland.org). They can also send you a link and password to watch the video on your own.

This will be a blended meeting both in person and on Zoom.
